l’Hydroptère back in the water
25th March 2008
l’Hydroptère came back to La Trinité sur Mer marina this afternoon after a pure-speed configuration period of six months in the shipyard. l’Hydroptère team took the opportunity of a quiet weather period to put the flying trimaran back in the water and to remast her.

l’Hydroptère’s aim in 2008 is as simple as it is complicated: to beat the absolute sailing speed record, that is, 49,09 knots over 500 meters, in addition to the ultimate dream of breaking the mythical sailing speed of 50 knots, the equivalent of the aeronautical sound barrier.

After crossing the Channel in 2005 faster than Blériot in his plane, l’Hydroptère broke two world speed records in the beginning of 2007, thus showing her combination of reliability and performance.

The concept of l’Hydroptère is simple – freeing her from Archimedes’ Principle, by lifting up the hulls of the boat through a vertical thrust developed by the foils, which are like sea wings.

Today, Alain Thébault’s flying trimaran holds the record for being the fastest sailing craft over one nautical mile, with an average speed of 41.69 knots.
The next goal is to cross the legendary 50-knot speed barrier, which is the equivalent of an aircraft breaking the sound barrier, so as to enter the History of Sailing.
